Are you curious about how the most complicated fountain pen filling system
works? Are you interested in seeing how these pens can be made to write like
new again? Look no further! In this hour-long seminar participants will learn
about the Snorkel's filling system, its unique anatomy that makes the filling
system operate, how it relates to other pens in the Sheaffer line up from the
same era, and a full demonstration of the Snorkel filling system. Each
participant will walk away with a handout of the information that is discussed.
Your Instructor
Nick Mastricola
Nick grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. While attending Michigan Technological University, a professor introduced him to fountain pens and he soon began collecting and using them himself.
In 2010, he moved to Ohio to attend Ohio State University’s graduate school. It was also in 2010 when he attended his first pen show. Shortly thereafter, he began repairing his own pens. After finishing his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, he worked as a lecturer at the university before getting a full-time position at Honda R&D North America.
In 2021, the organizers of the Columbus Pen Show asked if anyone local could do repair work since no repair people were slated to come. Nick jumped in to fill the spot. Since then, he has been repairing and restoring pens at various shows in the US. In 2023, he was transferred to Japan for work. While there, he exhibited at the Tokyo Pen Show. He moved back to the US in 2025, and isselling, repairing, and restoring pens in the US again.
Nick’s collecting and repairing interests (in the pen world) are mostly Snorkels, complicated and unusual filling mechanisms, pens with two or more nibs, any brand of safety pen, pens with unusual features, Pelikan 140s, and Montblanc. However, anything that catches his eye is fair game! He currently resides in Ohio, and continues to do his day job for Honda R&D while continuing to growing his pen business.
